Hi Giorgio, thanks for your comment. Sounds interesting, this project (www.sensetheplace.it). I like how you try to involve more than just vision to cognitively map urban places. Also your point about places that lack 'a sense of place' and are perceived as inauthentic brings to mind how Lynch already criticized 'non-places' as places without identities, before Marc Augé even coined the term.

Very interesting review, inspiring re-discovery of Lynch' milestone text.
I am an architect recently working on a research project in Milan, Italy, titled: "sense the place". The project can be defined a “experiential” cognitive mapping process that strategically recalls to use our 5 fundamental perceptional senses as “sensors”, sophisticated de-coding tools that, through images and colors, signs and sensations, sounds and noises, smells and aromas, textures and patterns, allow us to re-read and interpret the places we live in delivering us an extraordinary picture of the environments that surrounds us and, probably, of ourselves.
Would like to keep in contact.
Great blog

Thanks a lot for the review Michael. I'm working on the design of wayfinding in crowded places and had been leafing through The Image of the City. You give a clear idea of the content so I know what to read up!

Thanks for the review.
I admired that you pointed out only visual sense is dominated in the text and others neglected; for the ones who are interested in senses in built environment, I will suggest writings of Juhani Pallasmaa.

Michiel, this is a nice bit of work, good to read a fresh perspective. I've taught using this text for many years - always as the anchor for discussions on the social production of space, and the curious connection between it and the questionable iconic work of Jane Jacobs - best to you

Thanks for the review you've done!! That's inspiring. I'm planning to do my final paper of Urban Literature on The Great Gatsby. I'm trying to view the novel from Lynch's theory , hope it works for my paper. thank you
